Prompt: Will We Be Happy in a Perfect World?
Do you want to live in a world like Gattaca which has perfect genetic people, perfect machine and perfect knowledge about science? I don't want to! Perfect world provides us material well-being but harms our spirit. Even in a perfect world, there is also classification. People from every class will have their own unhappiness. In Gattaca world the burden of perfection can be just as difficult to bear as the burden of belonging to a genetic underclass.
Eugene/ Jerome is a valid person in Gattaca world and he is respected by other people but he wants to commit suicide because he is the second in a swimming competition, so he is not so perfect. The valid people must keep their perfection, which is the rule of the Gattaca world, so the world put great pressure on the valid people. When Jerome can't stand this pressure, he stands in front of the car to commit suicide. Therefore, striving for perfection gives a lot of unhappiness to him.
Jerome is not the only unhappy person in the perfect world, so is Anton. Anton is not as perfect as Jerome, but greater than his brother Vincent, who is an invalid person in the world. However, the valid person---Anton is defeated by Vincent in the swimming game. It is difficult for Anton to accept this fact. He gives himself great pressure, which is to win Vincent. He trains his body everyday in his swimming pool. Although he is greater than other police, he can't let go of the experience of losing to Vincent. Therefore, Anton is unhappy in the Gattaca world.
Vincent is also unhappy because he has a lot of pressure from the society with his invalid identity. Vincent is a God child so he is discriminated by other people. He cannot make the society accept and respect him, so he tries his best to achieve his dream to go to space to get away, but did no succeed. However, Vincent did not give up his dream. He doesn't care about the price to enter "Gattaca" where he can achieve his dream, even at the price of losing his family, identity and harming his body. Finally, he has his wish fulfilled, but he is not "Vincent". He is "Jerome" whose identity is what he bought, so he is not accepted by the society using his real identity. Therefore, what he loses is more than what he gets and the pressure will accompany him until he dies.
In general, people are unhappy in a perfect world, because we must bear the same burden. Perfection is great, so is pressure.
