Roman Holiday

By Jia Yixuan, from Class 1, Senior 2

Roman Holidayis a 1953 romantic comedy directed and produced by William Wyler.Gregory Peck stars as a reporter and Audrey Hepburn as a royal princess, running out to see Rome on her own.

The film's bittersweet story is a charming romantic comedy. A runaway princess named Princess Ann, during a goodwill tour of Europe, rebels against her sheltered life and royal obligations. She escapes the insulated confines of her royal prison to find a 'Prince Charming' commoner - an American journalist-reporter covering the royal tour in Rome. They spend their Roman holiday together and finally fall in love with each other. The story was reportedly based on the real-life Italian adventures of British Princess Margaret.

There are many perfect moments in the story that at times seems almost like a daydream, and then it brings the characters back to reality in a moving way. Moreover, the film also adds the atmosphere of Rome itself, with some creative scenes that make good use of the fit combination and such a classy feel gave by its black& white. The film received a phenomenal ten Academy Award nominations for a comedy. In addition, it launched the actress of Princess Ann——Audrey Hepburn,an unknown and obscure beauty into stardom over night. She got Oscar that year and started her legend since then.

Roman Holiday is one of the best films of the 1950s, even till now. Through this bittersweet romance, you can get a feeling l that you go home and back to your original life but knowing that the holiday has existed and been worthwhile. To make this kind of worthy remembering, don’t miss it and enjoy more than once.
