On April 19th 2018, the 15th Foreign Languages Festival's closing ceremony was held in BFLS! It is a traditional festival in BFLS, which has already taken place for over 15 years. Students and teachers come together to work hard every year in preparation for this highly esteemed festival and this year was no exception.

The festival took place over 2 weeks and many students from both grade 7 and grade 8 had the opportunity to give performances and show their interesting games.

I would like to pay particular attention to the closing ceremony which happened on the afternoon of April 19th 2018. During this final event, several gifted and talented poets, actors, singers and speakers all took part in order to draw an honourable conclusion to the foreign languages festival of 2018. These performances made the ceremony a truly breath taking experience!

The closing ceremony included a dramatic play of the ‘Merchant of Venice’ along with a presentation of the famous book ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’. This was followed by a fantastic retelling of the wonderful Wizard of Oz as well as another play of ‘The Tempest’. Finally, the ceremony concluded with some foreign language songs.

The first show was written by the famous British playwright William Shakespeare and the play was acted out by grade 7 students. Their stunning performance was enough to entertain the entire audience at the ceremony.

The story ‘The Merchant of Venice’ is about a Jew named Shylock who demands a pound of flesh from a merchant, known as Bassanio, after a trade deal went wrong. Bassanio’s wife, Portia, is able to save her husband from a gruesome death by using her intellect and wisdom to outsmart Shylock. Most of the play took place in a courthouse and the actors and actresses from grade 7 did a wonderful job of bringing the play to life. It was clear from their performance that they had all worked phenomenally well in order to present this high class English-speaking performance at BFLS.

Another performance was a speech about ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ which was given by Jiang Siqi from grade 8. She discussed how the themes of courage and love were represented in this famous novel through the characters Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Jiang Siqi was by far one of the most fluent speakers at the show and she is to be commended for her gallant presentation.

It would be a shame to not include the act of ‘The Tempest’, given by students from Grade 8. This was by far the most bizarre and outlandish performance of the ceremony! The actors and actresses had sword fights on the stage which captivated our attention for the entire 30 minutes of their act.

Finally, the show ended with the touching performances from the Korean song ‘Stay’ and the French song ‘On Ecrit Sur le Mur’. Although we could not understand the meaning of these songs, we were nevertheless taken aback by the heartfelt performance from these two singers.

We are all grateful to have been given the opportunity to take part and observe during this year’s foreign language festival. The festival has without doubt offered unforgettable memories that all the students at this school will cherish for years to come. I cannot wait for the foreign language festival next year!
