Day 4 (第四天)

We went to MIT school today. I got up early to catch the bus. We walked on some small paths through a mountain and then besides a lake. I finally met Bea and Lilu.

First, we listened to some kids sing us a Chinese song. They were so cute. Then we went to music class. The students from both Spain and China did some performances. They played piano, flute and cello. One child even composed the tune herself! They were so talented. But our Chinese students were very gifted too. They danced a square dancing while one of the student’s fathers played music. His daughter also played two songs for us. Then, to break the awkward situation, I sang them a folk song. I was so unprepared because I had never sung before without pre-exercising. If it wasn’t for Lilu, I probably would have refused to do it. During these activities, we not only appreciated the art of their country, but also shared our own culture to this part of the western world.

After that we went to have an aikido lesson. We tried it and I found out that I was pretty strong.

The meal was awful in school and I ended up giving my extra food to my teachers.

In the afternoon, we went to Mijas town. We got the chance to look down upon the Mediterranean Sea. The sky and sea seemed to connect together. We could even spot Africa which was partly hidden across the sea. The whole town was spread along the gentle slope of the mountains. The houses were all painted white with red tiles, which made this town feel so special. The weather varied a lot in this area. The unique architectural style of the buildings made this place a strong attraction for tourists from all over the world. And the pure white romantic scenery of Mijas was an ideal place to go for a ride on the donkeys. Everyone came back home completely exhausted from the trip. However, there was one person who still had lots of energy. Surprisingly, she made a really sumptuous meal for her host family. It seems that the cooking skills we learned were able to be put into use.

Day 5(第五天)

Ronda was the place we went to yesterday. It was an ancient city on a cliff, a small town written about by Hemingway in his works (a wonderful place for elopement). The remains of this historical site were spectacular. The bridge across the canyon was magnificent and sublime, connecting the old ruins to the town. The old city stood on a 750-meter-high cliff, with a knife-sharp cliff, across the valley from vast green fields, giving a thrilling sense of grandeur. My knees trembled when I took a glance down the cliffs. I couldn’t imagine how they had formed over time. The old ruins around the bridge that were falling part was really a tragedy to see.

I finally realized why the Spanish buildings were all in white: white reflects light and black absorbs light. So the buildings don’t get too hot during the summer. How clever!

I also fell into a bit of trouble too. I lost my lunch bag at Ronda. I later reflected on how this could have happened. My best friend Lilu also decided to teach me some ways on how to prevent losing items in the future. I apologized to my host family. This incident not only taught me a harsh lesson for losing stuff, but also taught me to be responsible for myself.

Tonight, Natalie and I went to my dream place - the book store!

This store was very large and full of variety types of books which I could not understand. I really wished I could read more Spanish! That way, I could read some books about history, poems, biology and other kinds of reading materials.

Anyway, I bought several books such as, ‘the Book Thief’of Mice and Men’ and ‘Collins for Español and Inglés’. I spent a lot of time there with Natalie talking about books. We share the same interests.

The books are a bit expensive. But I think I should be generous with myself once in a while. I usually save my money just to buy books. They are the only gifts that I buy for myself.

但是我还是买了两本书,分别是“the Book Thief’of Mice and Men” and ”Collins for Español and Inglés”。

Day 6(第六天)

Natalie’s history teacher was our tour guide; she told us a lot of stuff. She was nice, no wonder she was Natalie’s favorite teacher. (Or maybe it’s because history is such an appealing subject that everyone loves).

First, we went to the Roman theatre and Alcazaba. This was a historical monument in the city. It combines history and beauty in the same enclosure. The city was first built by the Romans, who came here to conquer. Some of the Roman-era materials were reused in the Moorish construction of the Alcazaba. The Alcazaba was used as defense against its enemies. Also, as we went inside, there were many rectangular courtyards, with small creeks, ponds and flowers in the gardens. The pathways spiraled through gardens with a number of elaborate fountains. One of the houses we spotted was for the king. Another bigger separate house was for the queen and her children. Because the king needed to treat every wife equally, he would not have had too many wives. The gardens were in the interior and they were inaccessible to the public. The beautiful clear ponds nearby reflected the buildings that towered above them. We also saw the Romans ponds that were used to make a fish sauce called Garum. The area is renowned as one of the most important Muslim works preserved in Spain. Towering walls and battlements were used for defense.

We had a picnic at the square. I was angry at some boys who came and took away my lunch.

Then we went to see the birth place and the museum of Picasso. We were exhausted at that time and found it hard to appreciate his artworks. To my surprise, he was a communist!

I rode a horse back to school. I had a great time with the history teacher.
